Song for a Scarlet Runner

Nine-year-old Peat lives with her sister on the outskirts of a mean little settlement called Skerrick. Her job is to tend the cattle, but when illness falls on the community she is blamed and must flee for her life. The only direction she can go is towards the treacherous swamplands and there she is taken by a mob of marsh aunties. Hilarious, but dangerous too, each of the aunties wants Peat. But there is one woman who must have her at all costs and that is the storyteller, Eadie, who needs a child to save her life.

Song for a Scarlet Runner is a story about friendship and finding your way in the world. The young heroine is forced to make a dangerous journey. She experiences hardship and betrayal but, with courage, luck and the help of her friends, she finds her way to freedom.

‘Both magical and superbly true… I raced through it feeling like an explorer on the edge of discovery.’
Anna Fienberg
